The Leader of the Opposition in Parliament (LOP), Joel Ssenyonyi has revealed an alleged plan to link him to Butambala terrorism case, in which former Butambala County MP Muwanga Kivumbi, is charged alongside 23 others.
In a post on his X page on Friday, Ssenyonyi said he had been informed that government was trying to add him to the case, however, he doesn’t mention the person who availed him the information.
“So, I’m told there is a ploy to potentially add me onto the “Terrorism” file of Butambala, or one of those other files in court” he posted.
Ssenyonyi, who is also the spokesperson of the National Unity Platform (NUP), alleged that the plot, is a retaliation by corrupt individuals within the government, responsible for alleged bad governance in the country.
“I’ve said previously; when you fight corruption, it fights back. Similarly, when you fight bad governance, it fights back! But we shall overcome” he posted.
Ssenyonyi’s claim, came hours after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted several tweets on his X page, in which he warned that Ssenyonyi and former Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, would follow former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to prison, over undisclosed charges.
“Semujju and Joel will follow very soon” he posted.
Muhoozi further vowed to remove Ssenyonyi from his position as Leader of the Opposition, with the help of former PLU secretary General David Kabanda’s help.
“I want the position of LOP to be taken by PLU” he posted.
Muhoozi further alleged that even the country’s constitution, cant stop him from appointing a leader of opposition, he thinks is best suited for the job.
“Hon. Kabanda is authorised to lead the operation in parliament to give us a new leader of the opposition” he posted.
Gen Muhoozi added, “After Hon. Kabanda finishes with Ssenyonyi. I will be waiting for him”.
In the terrorism case against Muwanga Kivumbi, the Deputy NUP President Central and 23 others, prosecution alleges that Kivumbi along with others at larger between January 11 and January 17, 2026, Kivumbi, coordinated and carried out a series of violent attacks in Kibibi Town Council and Gombe Town Council in Butambala District.
The terrorism charges against the group are contrary to Section 6(1) (a) and Section 3(o) of the Anti-Terrorism Act, Cap 120.
