The Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court has charged the former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, with misprision of treason.
The acting president of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party, Lukwago who was initially dumped by security operatives at Kira Road Police Station, was charged alongside Frank Kihehere, Joel Wakayima, Dr Kizza Besigye , Hajji Obeid Lutale Kamulega among others.
Prosecution told court that between 2021 and 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya, Lukwago, together with others including Joel Wakayima, Frank Atukunda and Dr. Kizza Besigye, allegedly became aware of treason-related plans but failed to report them to the relevant authorities.
However Lukwago has denied the charges.
Prior to his arraignment in court, Lukwago was dumped by security operatives at Kira Division Police Headquarters in Kira Municipality, where he recorded a statement in the presence of his lawyer, Medard Lubega Ssegona.
However most of his friends and family members were denied access to the station offices.
Misprision of treason, means an accused person knew of plans for unlawful change of government but didn’t report to lawful authority.
The court has remanded Lukwago to Luzira Prison until June 22nd, when the case will come up again for mention.
