The acting president of People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) party, Erias Lukwago has been dumped by security operatives at Kira Road Police Station and is set to be charged with treason charges.
According to sources, Lukwago who was seized by Special Forces Command (SFC) operatives on Monday was dumped at Kira Police, where he has been charged and the file is set to be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and sanctioning.
The Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke, confirmed that the charges being considered are treason and misprision of treason.
The release to police comes hours after the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba backtracked on his threats to teach Lukwago a lesson he would never forget, and revealed that he will release Lukwago to the police out of the love for his wife Mrs Charlotte Nankunda Kainerugaba.
The veteran opposition politician and lawyer’s arrest drew condemnation from opposition leaders, lawyers and rights activists.
Eng Winnie Byanyima, described the seizure as an assault on the rule of law and further accused the CDF of acting above the law.
“I am devastated by what has been done to Erias Lukwago. His abduction, torture and public humiliation are not just an attack on one man. They are an assault on the rule of law itself. President @KagutaMuseveni, your son and army commander has repeatedly demonstrated that he is above the law. He threatened to kill @kizzabesigye1, defied court processes, and now @EriasLukwago_ co-lead of Besigye’s defence team has been brutalised” she posted on her X account.
On Tuesday, lawyers from Lukwago’s legal team, led by Medard Lubega Sseggona, visited Nateete Police Station and the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) headquarters to file a missing person’s report.
