The Uganda Police is investigating the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates forward, Sydney Gongodyo who succumbed to injuries on Friday evening, following an alleged mob attack in Nakawa division.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Racheal Kawala, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, at around 2:00 p.m. in Masulira Zone, Bukoto I Parish, Nakawa Division.
“It is alleged that while in Masulira Zone, the victim was subjected to mob action by members of the public under circumstances that are still under investigation” she said in a statement.
Kawala revealed that Police officers responded promptly and rushed the victim to Mulago National Referral Hospital for medical treatment, unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 7:00 PM.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident” she said.
Kawala noted that efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved so that they can be brought to justice.
27 year old Sydney, a resident of Najjera in Kira Municipality, Wakiso District was also a student at Makerere University.
He played a pivotal role in the Black Pirates team that won both the Uganda Rugby Premiership and Uganda Cup last season.
The late Sydney was also part of the Pirates side that played Kenyan side Kabras Sugar Rugby Club, in the Enterprise Cup Finals at RFUEA Ngong Grounds Last weekend.
The Uganda Rugby Union has since postponed the Sunday Premiership semi final against Heathens on Sunday, in which Sydney was lined up to part in, his sudden demise has left the Ugandan rugby fraternity in mourning.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, the Pirates paid tribute to their fallen teammate.
“A sea robber to the bone has sailed his sail. No more sea billows for him. Till we meet again Sydney,” the club posted.
