Police in Mubende District are investigating the theft of UGX 100 million from a parked car, before abandoning part of the money and fleeing during a police pursuit.

According to the PRO Wamala Region SSP Lameck Kigozi, the incident occurred on Thursday at around 5:00 PM at Kalonga Trading Centre in Kalonga Sub-county.

“The suspects, travelling in a white Toyota Premio registration number UAP 811H, reportedly broke into a parked Toyota Rumion registration number UBR 308A and stole a laptop bag containing the cash” he said.

Kigozi revealed that the money had earlier been withdrawn from Centenary Bank Mubende Branch and was being transported back to Kalonga Trading Centre.

“The victim briefly parked the vehicle and entered a nearby shop, only to return moments later and discover that the vehicle had been broken into and the money stolen” he said.

Kigozi noted that the Police was immediately alerted and responded swiftly.

“Using the victim’s vehicle, officers pursued the suspects towards Kitenga, as the pursuit intensified, the suspects abandoned their vehicle and fled on foot. One suspect escaped carrying the laptop bag, while the other carried a white sack containing three different number plates believed to have been used interchangeably to evade detection” he said.

Kigozi said during the escape, the suspects dropped the bag containing UGX 50 million, along with the sack containing the number plates, before disappearing into an unknown location.

“Police recovered the abandoned motor vehicle, UGX 50 million in cash, and the three number plates. Statements from witnesses and victims have since been recorded” he said.

SSP Kigozi said investigations are ongoing, and efforts to trace and arrest the suspects are underway.
