National Unity Platform (NUP)’s John Mary Ssebuwufu, has been elected the new Kampala Capital City Authority Council (KCCA) Speaker, after defeating National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) Ali Kalule Ssalongo in a highly contested race.
The election which was held at City Hall, was presided over by Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa, saw Ssebuwufu secure 18 votes against Kalule’s 16, with one ballot declared invalid, sealing a tense but orderly contest for the council leadership seat.
Ssebuwufu is set to replace party compatriot Zahara Luyirika.
The race for Deputy Council Speaker saw NUP’s Olive Namazzi emerge winner of the seat with, 20 votes against Nicholas Kwarijah who scored 15 points.
The NUP duo were sworn in thereafter, ushering them as KCCA Council Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively for the 2026–2031 term.
