The independent Uganda Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled June 10, 2026, for Kikuube District to hold the by election to replace the vacant District Chairperson seat, following the death of incumbent and re-elected Chairperson Banura Peter.
According to the official roadmap released on Tuesday and signed off by the Chairperson, Electoral Commission Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon on 17th April, the by election process will start on 27th April with stakeholder engagement and a press briefing.
This will be followed by the update of the National Voters’ Register at the Parish Level from the 28th to 30th April, combined with the recruitment of officials to conduct display of the Voters’ Register from the 27th to 28th April while the cut off date for the registration of voters and transfer of voting location in Kikuube District set for 30th April.
The Electoral commission will from 8th May to 12th May, display the voters register at all polling stations in Kikuube District to enable voters confirm their voting details.
The display of Voters’ Register at Polling Stations in Kikuube District will run from 8th – 12th May 2026 and thereafter hold a two day nomination of candidates desiring the post on the 25th and 26th May, followed by a 12 day campaign period from May 28th to June 8th.
The commission noted that there will be a two day break after the campaigns before the polls are held on the June 10 to replace, the late Banura who passed on in a road crash early this month.
Justice Byabakama has urged all residents of Kikuube District to partake in the activities to see that they elect a new district chairperson.
“The Electoral Commission calls on all stakeholders in Kikuube District to participate in the above activities in accordance with the guidelines for the by-election” he said.
Banura who was the son to Uganda’s Ambassador to Burundi, Maj Gen (Rtd) Matia Kyaligonza, died after he was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Toyota Hiace vehicle commonly known as a drone at Butyamba Village (Butyamba IDP area) in Kikuube Town Council.
