The hearing of the main suspect in the murder of four toddlers, at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, Christopher Okello Onyum has been adjourned until Friday, after court heard that he is medically fit to stand trial.
On Thursday court heard that Okello has sickle cell disease, with a medical report revealing that a lapse in medication that may have contributed to his deteriorating condition during trial proceedings.
The report presented to court by Dr. Charles Kajoba from Murchison Bay Upper Prison, follows a directive by the trial presiding judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, to submit his medical report after Okello told court he was unwell during recent court hearing.
“He has a history of sickle cell disease. He was treated and is now in a good state of mind” Dr. Kajoba told court.
Court heard testimony from Okello’s former landlord at Kyanja, who told court that Okello initially claimed he was living in the United States before later saying he was staying in Ggaba. He said the suspect was introduced through local channels, although he could not recall the name of the chairperson involved in the introduction.
According to the testimony, the tenancy agreement was signed on March 16, 2026, allowing Okello to occupy the house.
However, the witness said he was later alerted by village defence authorities following the alleged incident in Ggaba who informed him of the gruesome act he had carried out at the day care and informed him to go to the apartment, where he took the spare keys, and upon arrival found police and a handcuffed Okello waiting for him.
A search of the suspects residence following the murders unearthed two American passports, two mobile phones, two laptops, a US driving permit, a medical sanity report, and a certificate of good conduct.
The hearing has been adjourned until Friday at 9am, with the cross examination of witness Joel Makayi and Okello remanded back to Luzira prison.
