The High Court has sentenced Mugerwa Paul to a 40 years’ imprisonment term over the murder of Dr. Olila Wilfred, on Monday following his own guilty plea to the murder on Monday.
The court presided over Hon. Lady Justice Sarah Birungi Kalibala, further sentenced Mugerwa to 20 years’ imprisonment on a second count of aggravated robbery.
The prosecution led by Chief State Attorney and Regional Officer Lira, Mr. Jonathan Okello told court that the murder, that deeply shook the Lango Region in January 2025, was both calculated and disturbing.
“The convict, an employee of a health insurance company based in Mbale, orchestrated the kidnapping of Dr. Olila Wilfred from Lira Hotel” Okello noted.
Prosecution further noted that Mugerwa, subsequently killed Olila and disposed of his body in Kalaki District.
Dr. Olila Wilfred was a retired medical doctor and a respected member of the community. He operated New Moroto Nursing Home in Lira, where he specialised in ear, nose, and throat care.
His violent death sent shockwaves across the region and left a lasting scar on the community he had served with dedication.
