The National Unity Platform (NUP) fraternity is in mourning following the death of the party’s Deputy Spokesperson, Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro’s wife, Edith Katende Mufumbiro who succumbed to cancer on Wednesday.
Edith Mufumbiro’s death was confirmed by the party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine in a post on his social media accounts.
“Edith passed on after 3:00am today following a hard-fought battle with cancer. At the time of her passing, her dear husband Waiswa remains detained at Luzira Upper Prison for no crime whatsoever. His only crime is speaking out against injustice and misrule” Bobi Wine wrote.
Bobi wine further noted that the “Unlawful Drilling” charges, for which Mufumbiro is currently remanded over which apparently took place on 12th February 2025 at the Party Headquarters, was the same day he spent besides his wife’s sick bed at Mulago Cancer Institute.
“In fact, on that day, Waiswa never stepped there as he was at Mulago Cancer Institute with the wife! The judiciary, fully aware of these facts, has chosen to conspire in this persecution” he said.
Bobi wine further called on the judiciary to release on bail members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) on the same charges.
“Waiswa, alongside other comrades, has applied for bail severally. He has variously made an impassioned plea to the Court to be released on bail so that he takes care of his sick wife, but it has been denied. The injustice!” he said.
The Party Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya described Edith’s passing as hitting different.
“The passing of our sister Edith Katende Mufumbiro hits differently, with all that our brother Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro has had to endure. How sad that those who wield power in Uganda never give a damn about the amount of pain they have caused to so many people! No words can describe this level of injustice” he said.
