The Uganda Police Counter Terrorism guards who were assigned by the independent Uganda Electoral Commission, to guard the National Unity Platform (NUP) Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine, during the recent national polls have been dismissed from the force.
According to a post by Bobi Wine on his X page on Thursday, the nine were all dismissed from the Uganda Police Force with disgrace over Neglect of Duty” after they allegedly helped him escape from his home in Magere, Wakiso District.
“And yet, in fact, these professional police officers were withdrawn on 15th January, which was Election Day. By the time I left my home on the 16th when the military raided, they were no longer on duty” Bobi Wine said.
According to the two time Presidential candidate, the officers are allegedly now being used as a scapegoat by government since it has failed to locate his whereabouts for two months.
“They’re looking for anyone to blame. In any event, these officers were deployed to protect me and not to spy on me. But this is what Museveni has turned all institutions into! He expects them to do everything illegal, criminal, or immoral to sustain his criminal enterprise. Choosing to act professionally has landed very many civil servants in trouble” he said.
Bobi Wine further alleged that in addition to being dismissed, officer Kigenyi and another were taken back to detention at the police station at the Railway grounds and are still being interrogated.
According to sources who preferred anonymity, five of the police officers were arrested last Friday and detained at the Railways Police Station in Kampala on the orders of Counter-terrorism Director, AIGP David Wasswa Ssengendo.
The source noted that the officers were charged with disobedience of lawful orders and withdrawing from work without permission.
However by the time of this publication, the police was yet to issue a statement regarding the alleged dismissal of the officers from the force.
