A team of Uganda Police counter terrorism officers who were assigned by the independent Uganda Electoral Commission, to guard the National Unity Platform (NUP) Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Sentamu alias Bobi Wine, during the recent national polls have been arrested by their superiors.
According to reliable sources, the officers were arrested early this week and are currently held at the Uganda Railway station holding cells near Jinja Road, facing charges of disobedience of lawful orders and withdrawing from work without permission.
However 360 News Ug couldn’t independently verify these charges.
On Wednesday, Bobi Wine, who remains in hiding following the elections and consequent raids on his home, criticised the police leadership over arresting his security detail at the end of the every election exercise.
“In the 2021 election, the police officers who were attached to our campaign were attacked violently and subjected to all manner of brutality. After the election, several of them including their head, Afande Kato were arrested and detained for a long period” he said.
The two time presidential candidate revealed that at the time, the guards were questioned about the party’s sources of funding, who he was meeting with and NUP’s plans among other things.
“They were also interrogated about why they always sought to protect us from violent attacks by other sections of the police and military” he said.
Bobi Wine noted that the officers are usually targeted for doing their job with professionalism and patriotism.
“Now, 2026, we have learnt that the officers who were attached to our campaign have also been arrested, and are being interrogated. These officers are usually targeted for doing their job with professionalism and patriotism. May we all stand in solidarity with them, and work for their freedom” Bobi Wine posted on his X account on Wednesday.
The Electoral Commission last year gave each, of the eight nominated presidential candidates 16 body guards to protect them throughout the election cycle.
By the time of this publication, the police force was yet to issue a statement on why the guards were arrested.
