The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has granted a non-cash bail to renowned Civil Society leader, Sarah Bireete after spending more than three weeks on remand at Luzira Prison.
The court on Wednesday set a non-cash bail of UGX 10 million for each surety and UGX 1 million cash for the Dr. Bireete who has been barred from leaving the country without the courts permission and was also ordered to deposit her passport with court immediately.
Bireete, who is the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), is facing charges of unlawfully obtaining or disclosing of personal data, contrary to Sections 35(1) and (2) of Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, Cap 97.
At the Beginning of this year, Bireete was arraigned before the same court where she denied the charges before being remanded to Luzira Prison.
According to prosecution, Dr Bireete and others still at large, between the month of January 2025 and December 2025, at various places within Uganda including Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso Districts, unlawfully obtained or disclosed data, National Voter’s Information, controlled or processed by the Electoral Commission, without prior consent of the said Electoral Commission.
Prior to the Wednesday ruling, the court previously deferred the ruling on the bail application of to today, (January 28) to allow the magistrate time to study submissions from both the state and Sarah’s defence lawyers.
Court has set February 27 for mention of the case.
