The Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court has deferred the ruling on the bail application of jailed Civil Society leader, Sarah Bireete to January 28 to allow the magistrate time to study submissions from both the state and Sarah’s defence lawyers.

Bireete, who is the Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), is facing charges of unlawfully obtaining or disclosing of personal data, contrary to Sections 35(1) and (2) of Uganda’s Data Protection and Privacy Act, Cap 97.

At the Beginning of this year, Bireete was arraigned before the same court where she denied the charges before being remanded to Luzira Prison.

According to prosecution, Dr Bireete and others still at large, between the month of January 2025 and December 2025, at various places within Uganda including Kampala, Mukono and Wakiso Districts, unlawfully obtained or disclosed data, National Voter’s Information, controlled or processed by the Electoral Commission, without prior consent of the said Electoral Commission.

Buganda Road court magistrate Jatiko remanded Bireete after the chief state attorney Keko Joan informed court that investigations into the matter were still ongoing and needed time to respond to a bail application by Dr Bireete’s defense team.

Dr Bireete’s has now been on remand at Luzira Prison for three weeks following her highly publicised arrest by joint security personnel from her home on December 30, 2025 and eventual remanding a few days later by the court.
