The government has postponed the reopening of schools inorder to ensure the safety of all learners, following the conclusion of the presidential elections in which incumbent Yoweri Kaguta Museveni was declared winner.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education Dr. Kedrice Turyagenda has in a statement directed that institutions will now reopen on February 10, 2026 instead off the previously scheduled February 2, date.

Turyagenda noted that the directive applies to all schools, including international schools, tertiary institutions, and universities.

“Vice Chancellors, Principals, Headteachers, parents, guardians, school administrators, students, and the public are hereby notified that Term One of the Academic Year 2026 will run from Tuesday, February 10, 2026, to May 1, 2026. All school administrators are required to adhere strictly to these dates and the approved school calendar,” the Permanent Secretary stated.

On January 6, 2026, the Ministry of Education and Sports had initially announced that all schools and educational institutions across the country would reopen on February 2, 2026.

On Saturday, the Electoral Commission announced that Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, representing the National Resistance Movement (NRM), was declared the president-elect.

Museveni, defeated seven other candidates, including the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known as Bobi Wine.

Parents and school administrators have been advised to plan accordingly as the country transitions back to normal academic operations after the electoral period.
