Officers at Entebbe Main Police Station are on their edges after an American national identified as Eric Nkusi, died while in custody at the police station last Friday following his arrest for overstaying in the country after the expiry of his visa.
According to reports, Nkusi, an American of Burundi origin and an alleged drug addict developed severe withdraw symptoms while in custody last Friday night.
Nkusi is said to have pleaded with the officers to be provided with heroin, claiming he would die without it which was dismissed by the officers on the desk who advised him to wait until he returns to his home country to access the illegal substance.
“Nkusi demanded access to drugs, warning that he might die without them. The officers thought he was faking and did not take his requests seriously. Unfortunately, he was found dead in his cell the next day,” a source said.
The incident has caused internal tension at Entebbe Police Station, with officers reportedly blaming each other for negligence.
The American Embassy in Kampala has since dispatched a team to investigate the circumstances surrounding Nkusi’s death.
Nkusi’s body was transferred to the City Mortuary Mulago for a postmortem examination.
Efforts to get comment from the Deputy Police Spokesperson Kampala metropolitan area Luke Owoyesigyire were futile since he’s known numbers were switched off at the time of this publication.

However waiting for the latest updates after the postmortem examination of Eric Nkusi and the way forward.
