The Gomba district Grade 1 Magistrate Court has charged three senior district officials with extortion and soliciting bribes from people in return for jobs within the district.
The officials who include the district Service Commission Chairperson Mugerwa John Bosco, the secretary Muwonge Michael and the District Inspector of Schools Lwanga Charles were arraigned before the court on charges of demanding money with menaces and conspiracy to commit a felony.
Court heard that the two Service Commission members between the months of February and November 2024 with intent to steal, conspired and extorted money from different applicants who were required to pay bribes between UGX 1 million and 20 million to be considered for jobs with some of the victims eventually securing senior positions within the district.
Additionally, Mr. Charles Lwanga, Senior Inspector of Schools at Gomba District Local Government, is charged with extorting funds from various Head Teachers in the district by promising them improved postings and promotions.
The arrests follow President Museveni’s directive to the State House anti-Corruption Unit to investigate and arrest officials involved in the sale of government jobs in the region.
Court remanded the trio until July 25, 2025 when the case will come up again for mention.
