Speaker Anita Among has ordered an investigation into Buyende district leadership’s handling of road maintenance funds as she flagged off the grading of all impassable feeder roads in the district.

While on her community empowerment tour in Buyende yesterday, Among noted with concerns from the locals that several community-access roads were impassable despite Parliament allocating each district Shs1billion annually for road maintenance.

Today, Speaker Among summoned the district engineer to bring the road equipment on site and ensure that all the bad roads are rehabilitated.

One of the roads includes the 3km Bugaya-Gwase road in Budiope East County, which the Speaker flagged off and urged the district to ensure that works are completed within two days.

“I must register my disappointment with the district. They are supposed to work on the roads but they have not. They claim they do not have fuel. Now, we have given them fuel, we want this [Bugaya-Gwase] road graded in two days so that they go and work on all other roads,” Among said.

The district’s inaction and lack of progress on road maintenance prompted the Speaker to launch an enquiry.

“My question is why is the district not maintaining these roads? I am going to investigate why the district is not working on the roads,” she said.

She urged NRM leaders to follow and monitor government programs and where necessary, complement such programs for the benefit of the communities. She commended the area MP, Moses Magogo for identifying and addressing such gaps that impede service delivery.
