The minister for the Presidency, Hon. Milly Babirye Babalanda has said up to 50 Ugandans will receive medals for their contribution towards the NRA liberation struggle that brought the current NRM government to power in 1986.
Min Babalanda while addressing media on Wednesday noted that this year’s celebrations and commemoration of national heroes which will take place at Lyantonde Technical Institute, Kaalori Town Council, Lyantonde District are vital to the country’s identity and cultural heritage.
“Lyatonde wasn’t only used a strategic route corridor for recruits but also was a corridor where most young men and women bravely joined the Bush War liberation struggle of 1981-86, those who didn’t physically join the war of liberation also sacrificed by contributing financially and morally to the struggle” she said.
Min Babalanda said the exploration into Uganda’s national heroes not only highlights their personal stories but also contextualizes their significance within the broader narrative of the nation.
“Equally so, many civilians in Lyantonde district played critical roles in the success of the Bush war, they either acted as contacts for the bush clandestine recruiting groups or they gave material support in form of money, food and any other required material and moral support” she said.
Min Babalanda said Lyantonde was choosen to host this years Heroes Day because of the critical role this new district that was curved out of the greater Rakai District played during the 1981-86 liberation struggle.
