There has been a heightened sense of security as Democratic Party members from different parts of the country rallied for their favorite candidate for the presidential flag bearer in a three way race amongst Min Norbert Mao, Eng Richard Ssebamala and Dr Lulume Bayiga at the ongoing DP delegate’s conference in Mbarara City.
During the campaigns by different groups, chaos erupted when Bukoto Central MP, Richard Sebamala forced his way into the gated premises where party officials were verifying delegates meant to elect the Party’s new leaders.
Emotions were further driven high after Dr Lulume accused incumbent Party President Norbert Mao of marrying off the party to President Yoweri Museveni’s NRM.
“We are a laughing stock. Everybody is laughing at us, ‘you can’t talk anything, you people are married to NRM, what are you.’ Today is the only time we have. Let us vote for change and remove Mr Mao from the leadership. Let him proceed as a [Justice] minister. He is not going to die. Let him go and leave our party with us. We must be able to stand firm and make this happen and save lives of people who will die because DP is going to be buried or resurrected today” Lulume said.
Selected Democratic Party members have today assembled in Mbarara City to choose their leaders as the party gears up for the 2026 national polls.
