In what is seemingly becoming a targeted attack on members of the leading opposition party in the country by state operatives, reports of the alleged abduction of National Unity Platform (NUP) lawyer Counsel Abed Nasser Mudyobole have been awash allover social media on Saturday.
According to NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi, Mr Mudyobole was abducted on Friday evening from Kyaliwajjala, a Kampala suburb.
“Mudiobole who is an advocate was invited to meet a client and on reaching the premises, he was put on gunpoint by heavily armed men and driven away in a drone to an unknown location. Earlier in the day, he was at the NUP Headquarters alongside other leaders from Eastern Uganda where we discussed the upcoming youth elections” Bobi wine posted.
Kyagulanyi further noted that the kidnapping is a sign of weakness by the government.
“AGAIN, THESE CRIMES DO NOT PROJECT STRENGTH. They project weakness and fear. Let us continue organising, mobilising and agitating for a better country. Grateful to Uganda Law Society for joining in the condemnation of these wanton crimes against humanity!” he said.
The Uganda Law Society (ULS) Vice President Mr Asiimwe Anthony condemned the abduction of their learned colleague and called for an end to the ongoing impunity.
“Enforced disappearances are currently a serious problem in many parts of Uganda. Political activists, human rights defenders, relatives of those already disappeared, key witnesses and lawyers seem to be particular targets. The overwhelming majority of the victims are men who are frequently tortured, or even killed, during incommunicado detention” he said.
Mr Aiimwe said preliminary inquiries with the police have not yielded any results and further cautioned all advocated to stay alert, beware of their surroundings and always review their personal security plans among other safety measures.
Recently released human rights lawyer Eron Kiiza described the abduction of Mudyobole because of his affiliation with NUP as most unfortunate.
“Comrade ABEDI NASSER MUDIOBOLE is an experienced lawyer, a member of @ug_lawsociety and used to be a staunch @FDCOfficial1 supporter who has previously contested on the FDC ticket for the position of Iganga Municipality Member of @Parliament_Ug. He is now eying it on the NUP ticket and has attracted the wrath of those who have made a habit of harassing NUP supporters. I last met him last year and we had a hearty chat before my own illegal detention this year. RELEASE ABEDI NASSER MUDIOBOLE. Politics is a human right, not a crime” Kiiza posted on his X on Saturday.
