The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has revealed that the upgrade of Jinja Airfield is set to boost domestic flights in the country.
According to a statement released by UCAA, Jinja Airfield got an upgrade with its runway, taxiway, and apron transformed from gravel surfaces into a modern paved runway and parallel taxiway.
The project forms part of the National Civil Aviation Master Plan, an initiative designed to modernize regional aerodromes, enhance connectivity, and support tourism and trade across the country.
The UCAA Spokesman Vianney Luggya, revealed that the upgraded runway is 23 metres wide and 1,710 metres long.
“The taxiways measure 19 metres wide, while the apron can accommodate up to six LET 410-sized aircraft” he said.
He further noted that the upgrades will enhance safety, reliability and efficiency of operations at Jinja Airfield, while contributing to wider efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity.
While launching the Airfield upgrade works in January, President Yoweri Museveni said the transformative project will bolster Uganda’s infrastructure, enhancing tourism and improving regional connectivity.
President Museveni emphasized the strategic importance of the project, highlighting Jinja’s potential as a transportation hub and a gateway for tourists.
“Constructing and expanding the airfield is logical. It will enable tourists to reach their destinations on time and ease transportation for both people and goods,” he said.
He further reiterated the importance of air travel for high-value tourists who prefer swift journeys.
