The Entebbe Central Police Station has in custody three suspects over the alleged robbery of a foreign investor’s passport and an unspecified amount of money, using forged police warrant cards on Saturday.
According to the Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke, the suspects identified as Osire John Pius, Girengero Pius and Emogu Julius allegedly entered an apartment in Division A, Entebbe Municipality and proceeded directly to a foreign investor between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m on Saturday.
“The suspects, who were dressed in civilian clothing and purported to be police officers on official duty, allegedly demanded the complainant’s passport and an unspecified sum of money” he said.
Kituuma noted that as the suspects questioned the complainant, a member of staff at the apartment alerted officers from the Counter-Terrorism Tourism Unit.
“The officers responded promptly and arrested the three suspects at the scene, during a search, the suspects were found in possession of two suspected forged police warrant cards” he said.
Kituuma revealed that preliminary investigations have linked the group to at least two earlier incidents involving foreign nationals in the Entebbe area.
“Two weeks ago, the group is suspected to have robbed tourists in Manyago, while one week ago, they allegedly robbed Indian nationals in Kitooro. It is alleged that the suspects target foreign nationals in areas commonly frequented by tourists” he said.
Kituuma further noted that the suspects reportedly use suspected forged security identification documents to impersonate officers on official duty, gain the confidence of their victims, and subsequently rob or extort them.
“They are currently in custody at Entebbe Police Station and will be processed in accordance with the law” he said.
