Students, staff of Nkumba University were on Saturday joined by residents of Nkumba-Bukolwa, to partake in the second day of the National Cleaning Day exercise to ensure cleanliness and proper hygiene of their community.
The university community engagement coordinator, Mr Richard Kisitu, revealed that they were joined by community members, Cucua Foundation and Nkumba University Rotary WASH Institute (RoWASHi) stewards in the cleaning exercise to enhance hygiene in the community.
“We are thrilled to have been joined by students and residents in Nkumba- Bukolwa, who have taken heed to the governments initiative to ensure that their communities are clean” he said.

He added, “We found the area in dire need of cleaning and we will ensure that this exercise will not stop today, but will continue more often in collaboration with our partners here” he said.

He further called on the larger student community and residents to participate in the exercise, which started in the past as ‘Bulungi bwansi” loosely translated to “for the good of the community”.
“Everyone should clean where they are and their surroundings because cleanliness and personal hygiene are essential for a healthy life” he said.
The founder Cucua Foundation, Ayona Desire Patience said the exercise is crucial in ensuring a healthy and clean environment for both the students and area residents.
“It also gives us an opportunity to clean, collaborate with the residents to ensure a clean surrounding. A clean area shouldn’t only focus on how the area looks, but also individual health and hygiene, if we continue waiting and looking for others to clean instead of doing it ourselves, we can’t improve on ourselves” she said.
The group cleaned areas from the University main gate to Bwaise and a community well as part of their efforts.
