Sad news has gripped the creative theatre industry, following the death of renowned playwright, actor, musician and theatre director Alex Mukulu at the age of 72.
However, his cause of death is yet to be revealed.
Mukulu will be remembered for his remarkable contribution to Uganda’s theatre and entertainment industry, as well as his strict and uncompromising character on stage while directing plays.
He was born in 1954 and studied film and drama at Makerere University.
His notable works include 30 Years of Bananas, Wounds of Africa, The Guest of Honour, Muzukulu wa Kabangala and Opera Bakisimba.
Mukulu also performed Journey to Self-Realisation at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.
Mukulu returned to theatre in 2024, during the World Theatre Day celebrations that were held at the National Theatre in Kampala, with his African adaptation of Shakespeare’s timeless classic, Romeo and Juliet after being away for 17 years.
The news of his death has sparked an outpouring of tributes from Uganda’s creative community, celebrating his decades-long contribution to theatre and the arts.
