The Officer in Charge (OC) of Kyesiiga police post in Masaka district, Willy Ogwal, has been arrested after allegedly shooting dead a two-year-old child and injuring two other civilians while responding to a disturbance at a bar.
According to the Kyesiiga sub-county chairperson Mikidad Lusiba, Ogwal was responding to a bar fight in Ndeeba trading center in Lwaggulwe parish, where a group of people had engaged suspected phone snatchers in the bar.
Ogwal is said to have been overwhelmed by the situation, prompting him to draw his gun and fire warning bullets, unfortunately he shot dead two year old Ashiraf Kiweewa, before injuring his mother, Aisha Kisakyamukama, and one Gerald Kiweewa, who are nursing wounds at Kyanamukaka Health Center IV.
Police officers from Masaka Central police station later arrested Ogwal and took him into custody at Kyanamukaka Police Station.
The greater Masaka regional police spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye confirmed the arrest, noting that investigations into the shooting is underway.
“We just want to understand what really transpired at the scene, whether it is murder or whether it was in self-defence. We have already recorded statements from some eyewitnesses” he said.
