Members of Parliament affiliated with the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a pressure group within the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ruling party, have written to the Speaker of Parliament, to change how the leader of opposition in Parliament is voted.
On Wednesday, the Buyaga West MP, Dennis Namara, formally notified the Speaker, Deputy speaker and Clerk to Parliament of their intention to seek leave to introduce a Private Member’s Bill aimed at amending the Administration of Parliament Act.
“In accordance with Rule 58 of the Rules of Procedure of Parliament, I hereby give notice of my intention to move a motion for leave of the House to introduce a Private Member’s Bill entitled “The Administration of Parliament (Amendment) Bill, 2026”he said.
The proposed amendment seeks to overhaul the statutory framework governing the selection of the LOP.
Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda, in a post on his X account, said the movement had started on the process of getting a new leader of opposition.
“The process of getting the new Leader of Opposition has officially commenced. Don’t ask me how, just know we will achieve it and we will do it legally” he posted.
The move comes days after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba posted several tweets on his X page, in which he warned that LOP Ssenyonyi and former Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, would follow former Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago to prison, over undisclosed charges.
“Semujju and Joel will follow very soon” he posted.
Muhoozi further vowed to remove Ssenyonyi from his position as Leader of the Opposition, with the help of former PLU secretary General David Kabanda’s help.
“I want the position of LOP to be taken by PLU” he posted.
Muhoozi further alleged that even the country’s constitution, cant stop him from appointing a leader of opposition, he thinks is best suited for the job.
“Hon. Kabanda is authorised to lead the operation in parliament to give us a new leader of the opposition” he posted.
Gen Muhoozi added, “After Hon. Kabanda finishes with Ssenyonyi. I will be waiting for him”.
