The Kampala Metropolitan Police has arrested a 36-year-old driver attached to a private security company, over unlawful possession of suspected government stores following an intelligence-led operation in Kawempe Division.
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy PRO, ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the suspect identified as Prosper Turinawe, a resident of Kyebando Central, was arrested on June 21st after police received information about a man allegedly seen with a pistol along Mawanda Road.
“Acting on the information, officers from Wandegeya Police Station mounted an operation and established that the suspect had been staying at a lodge in the area. He initially evaded arrest, but further information led to his interception at about 6:00 a.m. while in possession of 13 rounds of ammunition” he said.
Owoyesigyire said a search at his residence in Kyebando Central led to the recovery of about 40 spent cartridges of different calibres, black military-style boots, uniforms belonging to a private security company, and other uniforms from different organisations.
“The items were exhibited as evidence, the suspect is in police custody and has been charged with possession of government stores. Preliminary findings indicate that the premises he occupied may have been used to store the recovered items” he said.
Owoyesigyire noted that investigations are ongoing to establish the source of the exhibits and trace the firearm that remains unaccounted for.
“The suspect will be produced in court upon completion of inquiries” he said.
