The main suspect in the death of Uganda Rugby Cranes and Stanbic Black Pirates forward, Sydney Gongodyo who succumbed to injuries on Friday evening, following an alleged mob attack in Nakawa division has been arrested.
Mugwisa Obed, who is seen in the viral mob justice video clip hitting Sydney several times, has been arrested by boda boda riders this evening and handed over to Kira Road Police station.
Obed’s arrest and that of Owino Joseph, a security guard on Tuesday evening, brings to 10 the total number of suspects in custody as investigations into the alleged mob killing continue.
Mugwiisa Obed was captured in video footage wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a large log during the incident. During interrogation, he led investigators to a local laundry (dobbi) where he had taken the yellow T-shirt he was seen wearing on the day of the attack. The garment was subsequently recovered as part of the ongoing investigations.
Earlier today the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, SP Racheal Kawala, revealed that Kira Road Police had arrested five more people in connection with the death Sydney Gongodyo.
The suspects include Ssebagala Noordin, Ayebazibwe Roden, Namukose Juliet, Mondoni Elly, Twinomujuni Herbert, Katsigazi Perigrino, Tayebwa Darlious and Tugume Hannington.
Kawala said efforts are ongoing to identify, trace, and apprehend other individuals believed to have participated in the incident.
“Uganda Police Force remains committed to ensuring that all those responsible are brought to justice” she said.
According to preliminary investigations, the deceased was allegedly subjected to mob action by members of the public who accused him of snatching a woman’s handbag.
However, the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under active investigation.
Gongodyo succumbed to his injuries at approximately 7:00 p.m. at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he was rushed by police officers who responded to the scene for emergency medical treatment.
Gongodyo was laid to rest today, Tuesday, June 9, at Buweri Town Council in Budadiri County, Sironko District.
