The National Unity Platform (NUP) has unveiled Jinja South East MP Hon. Paul Mwiru, as it’s candidate in the race for speaker of the 12th Parliament.
The Party Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya, said Mwiru will present an alternative vision of what Parliament should look like.
However, on the position of Deputy Speakership, Rubongoya noted that the party is currently consulting with other opposition political parties, on whether they will field the candidate for the deputy speakership position.
“We are not the only party on the alternative in parliament, so we have resolved to consult with our other political parties and sister political parties in parliament to see if they wish to fill the candidate for deputy speakership to see that we have a formidable team there” he said.
While delivering his speech, Mwiru noted that, he is running for the Speakership with the ambition of enabling Ugandans to have a pro-people speaker who will restore the image of Parliament.
“Restore its strategic direction and reform its processes and procedure in person to a Parliament that serves the best interests of all Ugandans, irrespective of tribe, religion, colour, political party or creed” he said.
He added, “My candidature is vested in my proven commitment to defend our national constitution and serving the people of Uganda with honour, dignity and patriotism”.
Mwiru noted that his leadership comes at the right time when the country is striving for remarkable socio-economic transformation and a parliamentary leadership which will listen and respond to the aspirations of the masses
“On how national sources are allocated, the nature of laws passed and the manner in which Parliament operates…..I therefore call upon all members of the 12th Parliament to run around my candidature so that we can have a speaker who stands for consensus, fairness, equity, inclusivity, protection of privileges and dignity of members of Parliament” he said.
