The Law Development Centre (LDC) Court has charged Corporal Muhanguzi Humphrey, a counter terrorism officers attached to Speaker Anitah Among’s security detail, with the attempted murder of Annet Kemirembe near the Speaker’s residence on Mackinnon Road Thursday.
On Friday, Muhanguzi who was arrested last week was arraigned before the Wandegeya court and read the charges of attempted murder contrary to section 187 of the penal code act cap 128, which he denied.
Prosecution told court that on the 30th day of April 2026 at Kafu road Nakasero village in the Kampala district, Muhanguzi attempted to cause the death of one Kemirembe Annet.
However Muhanguzi denied the charges and was remanded until May 18th, when the case will be mentioned again for bail application.
Following the shooting last week, the Director Communication & Public Affairs Parliament of Uganda, Chris Obore revealed that there was an altercation between Kemirembe and Among’s body guard prior to the shooting
“There was an altercation btn a female driver & policeman on Mackinon Road which is under construction. The Speaker was in Bukedea. Apparently female driver insisted on using the road against policeman’s advise. He banged the car bonnet with a gun& bullet discharged” he posted on his X account.
The Speaker’s Principal Press Secretary Joseph Sabiti, said at the time of the incident, Among was traveling from Bukedea, where she had gone to attend a family event at the time of the shooting, disputing earlier reports that the female driver was shot and injured by a police guard after she allegedly refused to heed instructions to stop and allow the convoy of the Speaker to pass.
“While en route from Bukedea, where she had gone to attend a family event, the Kampala Metropolitan Police informed the Rt Hon Speaker about an incident that had occurred near her residence, involving a police officer and a female driver, while she was not at home” he posted on X.
Sabiti further maintained that the Speaker was briefed by police authorities, upon her return to Kampala and she contacted Kemirembe’s family to express her sympathies and offer support for their treatment.
Kemirembe is said to have been driving from prayers at All Saints Cathedral when she approached the road leading towards the Speaker’s residence, an area under heightened security.
