The independent Uganda Electoral Commission has set June 24th, as the election date to fill in the vacant position of Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament.
According to the program approved by the EC chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the by election started with a stakeholders’ meeting and press briefing on Friday, which is set to be followed by the update of the National voters’ register at the Parish level, recruitment of officials to conduct display of the voters’ register from 11th – 13th May.
There will be display of the voters register at polling stations in from 20th – 29th May, with nomination of candidates to take place from 10th – 11th June at Kalangala District Headquarters.
The commission has also set a 10 day campaign period which will run from the 12th – 22nd June, with the election set to take place on Wednesday, June 24th.
“The Electoral Commission calls on all stakeholders in Kalangala District to participate in the above activities in accordance with the guidelines for the by-election” Justice Byabakama said.
The Kalangala woman MP seat fell vacant following the untimely death of former MP Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away following an unsuccessful uterine fibroid removal operation at Alexandros Medical Center, last month.
Nakimuli, a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), had just been re-elected to the office in the January polls.
Among the contenders seeking to replace Nakimuli include, NUP’s Nakitende Maria, independent Hellen Flavia Nagawa and NRM’s Idah Nabayiga.
