The Katakwi District Local Government is in mourning after the passing of the District Health Officer (DHO), Dr Simon Ichumar Omeke, in a road crash at Ogoloi village along the Soroti-Katakwi road.
According to sources, the accident that claimed Dr Omeke’s life occurred at around 10pm, as Dr Omeke was driving back home in Soroti City after work with two colleagues.
First responders noted that the woman, identified only as Charity, was seated in the front passenger seat alongside Dr Ichumar, while an elderly man, believed to be the driver of Dr Ichumar’s tractor, was seated in the back.
Katakwi LC5 chairperson Geoffrey Omolo who visited the accident scene said the vehicle, registration number UG 6670M, may have developed a mechanical fault leading to the accident.
Dr Omeke’s death leaves a significant gap in Katakwi’s health leadership, where he has been at the forefront of public health management and service delivery in the district.
The Police was yet to issue a statement on the incident by the time of this publication.
