Police at Katwe have arrested five suspects in connection with a numberplate theft racket, following a surge in the theft of motor vehicle number plates in the areas of Ndejje, Mutundwe, and Masaja,
According to the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson Kawala Rachael, preliminary findings indicate that the suspects allegedly steal number plates, leave behind their phone contacts, and then demand money from the vehicle owners in exchange for their return.
Kawala noted that search operations have been conducted in various locations, leading to the recovery of over 20 stolen number plates.
The suspects are believed to be part of a racket that has been targeting motorists by stealing number plates and later demanding money for their return.
Following the operation, police recovered a number of number plates that include: UAX 009/C, UAZ 753/W, UA 613BQ, UAY 398/Z, and UBH 385/H.
