As outgoing Butambala County MP Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, battles charges of terrorism alongside 24 other suspects before Butambala Chief Magistrate Deogratius Ssejjemba, a video has emerged showing part of what happened at the remanded legislature’s home on the January 15th election night.
Kivumbi and the 24 others currently on remand at Kitalya prison, are accused by the state of mobilising and attacking police officers with machetes on Election Day which led to security fatally shooting dead seven people.
However, the two and a half minute video shows Muwanga Kivumbi, dressed in a red long sleeved Kitengi shirt and a pair of Khaki trousers taking cover under the dining table with a number of people who were hiding with him telling him to remain hidden following the nigh raid on his home.
Kivumbi, is heard telling people hiding with him in the room that the security personnel were going to arrest his campaign team and tries to move out of hiding to go out and check on the people but is stopped by people in the room who tell him to remain in hiding.
Screams from women and other people being brutalised by security personnel are heard outside the house, prompting kivumbi to head towards the door and check on the situation but is still stopped by people in the room filled with mattresses laid out on the floor.
“Honourable no, you hold him there, let him not go out”, “They are provoking you”, “They are going to arrest”, “Your mum has told me to tell you not to do anything, stay inside, do it for your mum, you will kill your mum”, “They want to take the President’s (Bobi Wine) DR forms” are some of the concerns raised by people in the room towards the MP to try and convince him to say indoors during the security raid.
He however continues to respond to them, “They are beating people, let me go, bring the key” Kivumbi repeatedly told people in the room as the video comes to an end.
In the morning after the fatal shootings in a story aired by Nation Media Groups’ NTV, incarcerated MP kivumbi, who is still in the previous night’s clothes, while showing his bullet rigged home reveals that 10 people were killed in his home by security officers, three more than what security forces allege.
“They killed 10 people from inside the house, they were not even on the road, they killed them. I think they were looking for me, when they failed to open the main door, that tried opening this one and they shot bullets at it and after it opened and they realised that they had killed innocent people, they opened heavy fire again for about 15 minutes, it would make you think Kenya has attacked Uganda” he said.
Kivumbi who spoke to journalists at his residence in Bugoye village, Gombe Sub-county, rejected police and presidential claims that he led an attack on security installations, instead accusing security forces of storming his home and shooting dead several supporters who had gathered there after the polls.
During the last hearing of his treason case, His Worship Deogratius Ssejjemba halted the hearing, after two of the 24 other accused persons were suspected to be minors.
