Police in Entebbe has arrested nine members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) after they were found holding a consultative meeting in the home of one of their members in Kigungu on Sunday.
According to reports, the NUP members who are in custody at the Entebbe Airport Aviation Police had met to strategize and organize the youth teams that were going to participate in different positions in next year’s polls in the area.
Mr John Mugabi, one of the party members who also attended the meeting but managed to escape arrest condemned his colleague’s arrest.

“The person who organized the meeting informed the police beforehand of the meeting in order to avoid any inconveniences but it’s sad that as we approach the elections when even the Electoral Commission gave all political parties a roadmap to run their campaign activities but NUP hasn’t been given a fair opportunity” he said.
Among those arrested and are currently held at the aviation police include, Lillian Babirye, Stuart Lubwama, Robert Masaazi, Bakisita Andrew, Kitaka Yahaya and Tadeo Kibirige among others.
The Entebbe Municipality NUP focal person Daisy Aloyo said even though the party members are still in high spirits behind bars, she condemned the charge of being a public nuisance that has been placed against them.

“The Aviation Police has informed us that we will hold a meeting with them a meeting at 3pm, talk with our people and ask for their release because they have not committed any crime, the Electoral commission which gave us the road map to start our activities should come out and condemn these arrests by the security forces as we approach the elections which are completely baseless” she said.
Efforts to get comment from the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigire on the groups arrest were futile by time of publication since his known numbers were off.
