President Yoweri Museveni has ordered Prime Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, to fast track the construction of a mega international Airport at Nyakisharara in Mbarara district.
In a letter dated February 11th, 2026, President Museveni directs PM Nabbanja and all relevant government ministries to offer support to Base Seven Company, a private investor to set up what is set to be Uganda’s second international airport at the Government Aerodrome of Nyakyisharara, in Mbarara City.
Museveni notes that the Airport will act as an international aviation hub for strategic refuelling and transit for long haul flights between Latin America especially between Brazil and China.
He noted that the Airport will cut travel time between the two areas since currently it takes one between 34 to 42 hours to fly from South America to China yet the Nyakyisharara hub which will be a refuelling point would only take 20 hours.
Museveni noted that Base Seven Company will use it’s own funds to carry out the construction and recover the money through the Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) to the Government, strategy after an agreed period.
“The Financiers are Hunnan and Black rock and the operator will be nominated by the Financier, the whole project will cover 21 Square Kilometers of land and it will have two runaways, measuring 5.5Kms long each. There will also be a reserve runaway for VIPs that will measure 3.7Kms long” he said.
Museveni further noted that the said investor will shift the Ibanda – Mbarara Public road to a point to the East of Nyakisharara at their own cost to smoothen the construction.
With a number of key major major developments taking place in the area, the construction of an international Airport will see Mbarara City become a global aviation hub.
