Renowned Singer and National Unity Platform (NUP) member Buken Ali, alias Nubian Li has been declared the winner of the Nakawa Division mayoral race after more than 20 hours of tense vote counting at Makerere University Business School Nakawa.
Nubian Li a close ally of National Unity Platform (NUP) President Bobi Wine, was declared winner in the wee hours of Thursday morning after defeating several contenders in the highly contested race including incumbent mayor, Paul Mugambe and Suzan Zawedde among others.
While addressing media shortly after his declaration, Nubian Li pledged to work closely with the people of Nakawa.
“The people of Nakawa have wished for me to lead them especially in bringing services closer to them through the office of the Mayor and we are going to accomplish a lot together” he said.
He further thanked God, members of his party and his wife Salma Buken for standing with him through the campaigns and ensuring they safe guarded the vote until he was declared winner.
“We are going to do many things together, we know the problems of Nakawa because I was born and raised in Nakawa. I may not break them all down now but I promise to serve you as an opposition leader who won’t change” he said.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Joel Ssenyonyi thanked Nakawa residents for choosing Nubian Li as their leader.
“Nakawa people, I congratulate you for choosing a unique leader. With Nubian Li, you have elected someone who is both creative and composed” he said.
The victory marks a significant win for the NUP in Kampala, underscoring the party’s continued strength and support in Uganda’s urban centres
