The Supreme Court chaired by Chief Justice Dr Flavian Zeija has begun hearing the election petition by former presidential candidate on the National Peasants’ Party ticket Robert Kasibante, in which he challenges the election of President-elect Yoweri Kaguta Museveni in the January 15th Polls.

Dr Zeija will preside the hearing of Presidential Election Petition No. 1 of 2026 alongside eight Supreme Court Justices who include Justices Tuhaise, Chibita, Musoke, Musota, Madrama, Bamugemereire, Kibeedi and Mugenyi.

In the petition, Kasibante who is challenging the January 15 election, alleging widespread irregularities and violations of electoral laws is seeking for court orders to compel disclosure of key electoral materials and access to electronic voting systems used in the January 15 presidential election.

Kasibante who came sixth in the eight man presidential race alleges that the Biometric Voter Verification (BVV) kits which failed to operate on the election day at many polling stations, were deployed without proper legal backing, and were never independently audited.

The former presidential candidate wants court to nullify President Museveni’s victory, cancel results from ungazetted polling stations, audit election returns and electronic systems, and order fresh elections.

Additionally, Kasibante is also challenging the transmission, tallying, and declaration of results, citing discrepancies in Declaration of Results forms, delays, and lack of transparency.

Recently, President Yoweri Museveni, through his lawyers of K and K Advocates asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the petition with costs insisting that the January 15th, 2026, presidential election was free, fair, and conducted in accordance with the Constitution.

Museveni was declared winner of the election on January 17th after polling more than 7.9million votes, representing71.6% of the valid votes cast.
