The Uganda Episcopal Conference (UEC) has called on God’s divine guidance and protection for the country to hold peaceful elections starting Thursday next week.
The Chairman UEC and Bishop of Kiyinda- Mityana Diocese Rt. Rev. Joseph Antony Zziwa, in a National Prayer for Peaceful elections issued on Tuesday urged faithful pray for the country to have peace throughout the forthcoming exercise.
“As we approach the national elections, we seek your divine guidance, protection and blessing. Grant us wisdom to choose leaders who are truly patriotic, courage to uphold truth and justice, and patience to listen to one another with respect. May what we do aim at promoting justice and peace in Uganda” the prayer reads.
The church further prayed for the Electoral Commission to oversee the elections with integrity, fairness and truth.
“We pray for the Electoral Commission to carry out its task with integrity, fairness and truth. May the candidates be humble and respectful to people as they solicit votes; and the voters have the courage, patience and discernment guided by your Spirit to choose leaders after your will”.
Bishop Zziwa further prayed for citizens to have hearts free from hatred and save the country from the evils of tribalism, greed and sectarian tendencies that help the country remain united and strong as one after the elections.
“Save us from violence, free our hearts from hatred and may our minds be for the common good. Save us from the evils of tribalism, greed, arrogance and sectarian tendencies.
May the Spirit of unity rise above division, and may our hearts be filled with love for our country. Let truth guide our words, peace inspire our actions and hope illumine our future.
After the elections, Lord, may our nation remain united and strong, living always by our motto: For God and My Country” Bishop Zziwa prayed.
The Catholic Church has in recent weeks been very vocal on condemning acts of violence committed by Uganda security agencies against civilians mainly supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) during the campaigns.
