The Territorial Police in the Rwizi Region, has arrested Enock Atwebembire in connection with the murder of Ninsiima Medius, a 52-year-old resident of Kyonyo Cell, Bushwere Parish, Mwizi Sub-county in Rwampara District.
According to police, Atwebembire was arrested after, Hector, the police sniffer dog was deployed at the murder scene which was able to lead police to a public gathering where the suspect was arrested from.
Police’s preliminary investigations indicate that on 4 January 2026 at around 6:00 pm, the deceased, Ninsiima Medius, left her home and went to Rwentojo Trading Centre to buy salt.
While there, she encountered a campaign rally for a parliamentary candidate, where she delayed for some time.
On her way back home, she was attacked by an assailant armed with a panga approximately 20 metres from her residence who inflicted four deep cuts on her head and injured the fingers of her right hand.
Police noted that the deceased raised an alarm, which attracted members of the community, however, she later succumbed to excessive bleeding. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the attack.
Police were notified and promptly introduced canine, Hector at the scene which tracked a scent trail that led officers to a public gathering, where the suspect Enock Atwebembire was identified and arrested.
Further inquiries established that the suspect had previously been found hiding under the bed of the deceased while armed with a panga. It was also confirmed that the deceased was the aunt of the suspect.
Police further noted that inquiries are still ongoing in the case.
