The Executive Director of the Centre for Constitutional Governance (CCG), Sarah Bireete has been arrested by security operatives this afternoon over yet to be known reasons.
The arrest of the renowned Civil society leader has been confirmed by the Uganda Police through it’s X account.
“Kawala Rachael, The Uganda police force would like to confirm the arrest of Sarah Bireete director for center for constitutional governance. She is in police custody. She will be arraigned before court in due course” the force posted on Tuesday.
However the police is yet to give the charges for her arrest.
Earlier on, Ms Bireete alerted netizens on her safety after she reported her home being seized by police and UPDF personnel.

“My house is under siege by Police and Army.” Ms Bireete, posted.
The civil society leaders arrest comes amid an ongoing national debate over civil liberties, the role of security agencies in domestic political affairs, and preparations for the upcoming election cycle.
Ms Bireete is the founding partner and Executive Director of CCG, a Kampala-based constitutional and governance watchdog that works on electoral integrity, rule of law, civic education and accountability.
