Police in Arua City have in custody six Congolese Nationals over allegedly dealing in counterfeit US Dollars’ worth $300,000 (UGX 1.06 billion).
According to reports, the suspects were arrested while trying to exchange the money which was packed in three bundles into Ugandan shillings at Upper Bibia Cell, Pangisha Ward, Arua Central Division on Friday.
The officer in charge of operations at Arua CPS Richard Amvuku said the suspect’s arrests followed a tip off from community members.
The West Nile Police Spokesperson Anguyo Jimmy has warned the business community and the public against transacting foreign currency in unlicensed places, noting that such dealings expose them to fraudsters.
The suspects were identified as Joseph Manikeleza, Asiha Mumbere, Aquinza Dudu Mitira, Sadraq Kabutala, Jean Pierre Hassan, and Musa Muhammad all aged between 25 and 50.
The group claimed to be Congolese refugees but had no documentation at the time of arrest. They face charges of dealing in fake currency and defrauding the public.
