In a breathtaking showdown at Mandela National Stadium, the Uganda Cranes edged through to the CHAN 2024 quarterfinals after a ripping 3–3 draw against South Africa, staging a dramatic comeback that will be remembered for years to come.
The result was enough for Uganda to top their group and secure a spot in the knockout stages for the first time in the tournament’s history. South Africa, meanwhile, was eliminated from the competition.
Uganda seemed in control when Jude Ssemugabi fired home in the 31st minute, capitalizing on a slick counterattack following a pinpoint pass from Patrick Kakande. The hosts headed into halftime with a 1–0 lead and confidence soaring.
The Bafana Bafana emerged determined after the break. Ramahlwe Mphahlele equalized in the 52nd minute following a VAR-checked strike. Just six minutes later, Thabiso Kutumela found the net from a tight angle to give South Africa a 2–1 advantage.
Moments of calm were few as Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo unleashed a stunning effort from outside the box in the 83rd minute, making it 3–1 and seemingly crushing Uganda’s hopes.
Late-game drama
But the Cranes refused to yield. In the 88th minute, Uganda was awarded a penalty after a challenge on Ivan Ahimbisibwe. Allan Okello stepped up, and with nerves of steel, slotted home to bring the score to 3–2.
The drama reached its peak deep in stoppage time. A VAR check revealed a handball in the South African box, resulting in another penalty. Captain Rogers Torach took the spot-kick and calmly slotted it home in the 96th minute, sparking wild celebrations and sealing Uganda’s place in the knockout stage.
