The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Justice Byabakama Simon Mugenyi has announced new nomination dates for candidates seeking to stand for Presidency in next year’s national elections.
“The Electoral Commission has adjusted the dates for the nomination of candidates for Presidential Elections 2025/2026, which was earlier scheduled to be conducted on 2nd and 3rd October 2025. The nominations will now take place on 23rd and 24th September 2025″ Byabakama noted.
Byabakama made the remarks at a press conference held at the commission’s head office in Kampala on Friday.
Byabakama said the adjustment of the nominations will give the commission time to capture nomination returns, produce ballot paper samples, harmonise campaign programs and signing Memorandum of Undertaking with candidates.
“A presidential candidate’s nomination shall be supported by at least 100 registered voters from each of at least two-thirds of all districts in Uganda — that is, 97 districts” Byabakama noted.
Byabakama further said the conduct of presidential campaigns will start on 4th October 2025 and end on 12th January 2026 in line with Section 22(1) of the Presidential Elections Act among other changes made in the 2025/2026 General Elections.
“The Commission further takes this opportunity to remind aspirants for the various elective positions and the general public to take note of the following key dates under the Roadmap for the General Elections:
1. Nomination of Candidates for Local Governments, including SIGs: 3rd – 12th September 2025.
2. Nomination of Candidates for Parliamentary Elections: 16th – 17th September 2025.
3. Nomination of candidates for SIGs Representatives to Local Governments: 8th – 12th December 2025″
4. Nomination of candidates for Presidential Elections: 23-24 September 2025
The commission further assigned dates for the campaigning period for the various positions
- Presidential campaigns: 4 October 2025 – 12 January 2026.
- Parliamentary campaigns: 23 September 2025 – 12 January 2026.
- Local Government campaigns: 13 September 2025 – 12 January 2026.
