The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has issued a 21 day environmental restoration order to a chicken and piggery farm over polluting the environment in Nkumba- Bendegere Village, Katabi Town Council, Wakiso district.

According to the head, corporate communications Unit at NEMA Ms Naomi Karekaho the restoration order followed continued pollution arising from poor waste management practices and the persistent emission of a foul smell.

“This systematic action follows two systematic inspections conducted by NEMA on 7th February 2025 and 13th June 2025, in response to repeated public complaints. The inspections confirmed that the farms activities are polluting the surrounding environment and posing a danger to human health” Ms Karekaho said.

Ms Karekaho noted that despite several engagements with the owner of the farm, he has refused to comply with the authority’s directives aimed at mitigating the pollution.

“The facility is illegally operating with more than 10,000 chickens without the necessary environmental approvals and waste management at the site has been found to be grossly inadequate resulting in offensive odours that continue to inconvenience residents”

The farm has been ordered to stop immediately all activities that generate the foul smell and poor waste management, demolish all illegal farm structures erected without approval, remove all waste materials and refuse responsible for the pollution, clean up the affected environment using appropriate techniques and desist from any further polluting activities or actions harmful to the environment and public health.

“The farm has 21 days from the date of receipt of the restoration order to fully comply, failure to do so shall compel NEMA to undertake enforcement actions, including recovering costs incurred and instituting criminal proceedings in line with sections 133, 157, 162 and 163 of the national environment Act, Cap 181” she said.
