The National Unity Platform (NUP), has distanced it’s self from a publicly confessed meeting between the former Masaka City Woman Member of Parliament candidate Rose Nalubowa, and President Yoweri Museveni, at State House.
In a post shared on it’s Social media handles, Uganda’s leading opposition party revealed that it was never consulted by their party member about meeting the president, which left them in the dark about the meeting following the elections.
“Our attention has been brought to comments made by Hon. Rose Nalubowa by which she stated that she met with Gen. Yoweri Museveni, who according to her, summoned her after elections. We wish to clarify that as a Party we were never consulted on this matter, and were not aware of any such meeting” NUP said in a statement released on Saturday.
NUP’s statement follows a string of interviews in recent days, during which she admitted to meeting the head of state but dismissed speculation on the meeting’s purpose, noting that she had an obligation to meet Museveni, who had summoned her to statehouse.
However Nalubowa, who alleged that she met 12 other NUP members at state house during the meeting, revealed that the meeting took an unexpected turn when she discovered that her rival in the concluded elections, NRM’s Justine Nameere, the Masaka City Woman MP whose election victory she challenged in court, was seated right across from her.
She further noted that the two, despite being in the same room, never exchanged a single word throughout the meeting.
However Nameere, in a video shared on her socials, disputed Nalubowa’s account of events, revealing that it was her who setup the meeting with the head of state, following a request by Nalubowa.
“You woman who pretends to be a person of God, yet you’re a witch, your full of lies. Of all things you would have done, you shouldn’t have accused President Museveni that you were summoned”she said.
She added, “It’s you who requested me in kind that you wanted to meet the president, and I also informed him that my opponent wants to meet him, I also shared with him everything we had talked discussed together with your husband, I then took you to meet the president, why do you put pain in my heart, who took you to the president” she said.
Even though both women don’t give specific details about what was discussed in the meeting, the confirmation of the meeting, comes amid growing public interest over engagements between opposition figures and the Head of State.
