The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Chairperson Aligoi Sub-county in Bukedea district, Samson Wamimbi, has died following acts of violence that erupted in the area during the just concluded Local Council Elections conducted on Wednesday across the country.
According to reports, violence began on Tuesday evening when Wamimbi and his team allegedly moved around the villages, firing bullets in the air.
The violence is said to have escalated on Wednesday, when Wamimbi allegedly tried to stuff ballots for the NRM candidate and incumbent sub-county chairperson Robert Kauka, who was facing off with competition from independent Ben Ecaat, prompting residents to attack him.
The residents are then said to have mobbed Wamimbi whom they accused of vote rigging, voter disenfranchisement, and interference in the elections in favour of NRM’s Kauka who they alleged was imposed on them through a fraudulent NRM primary election.
The deceased was initially rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital and later referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, but died while being transferred to kampala City for better management.
By the time of this publication the police was yet to issue a statement on the incident.
