The Mukono Magistrates Court has dismissed an election petition by former State Minister for Water Ronald Kibuule, seeking a vote recount in the recent Mukono North MP Elections.
Former legislator Kibuule ran to court after he lost out on the second attempt to return to parliament to National Unity Platform’s (NUP) Kiwanuka Abdullah Kayongo Mulimamayuuni.
While addressing journalists following the dismissal of the petition on Thursday, Kiwanuka noted that he had been ready to defend his victory against Kibuule whom he alleged wanted to impose himself on resident of Mukono North.
“Let him go and try other things, President Museveni should give him a position like that of an RDC, but when it comes to representing people, people got fed up of him, please don’t impose him on people, let him go elsewhere and hopefully he doesn’t mistreat people there like he did in Mukono North” he said.
Over the weekend, the Mukono North MP-elect Abdallah stormed Mukono District tally centre after learning that a group of NRM youths were allegedly tampering with ballot boxes during a power blackout in the area.
Kiwanuka who voiced concern about tampering and a possible recount plot by his NRM rival, Ronald Kibuule’s camp and vowed to sleep at the Tally centre despite the blackout, revealed that the group of youth fled the Tally centre when police arrived.
Kiwanuka was declared winner of the Mukono North MP seat with 15,017 votes, defeating former State Minister for Water, Ronald Kibuule, who polled 11,176 votes marking his second consecutive loss to Mr Kiwanuka.
Earlier this week, Mukono District National Resistance Movement (NRM) chairperson Haruna Semakula conceded the party’s defeat in the district, attributing the loss to overconfidence and failure by candidates to actively campaign.
The National Unity Platform retained its dominance in Mukono District after sweeping all elective seats, including Mukono Municipality, Mukono North, Mukono South, Nakifuma County and the District Woman MP seat.
