Students and staff of Teso Progressive Academy in Ngora District have today been left in shock after a police woman shot dead a Senior Three Student and injured a teacher during an arrest at the school on Tuesday.
According to eye witness account, a confrontation occurred after the deceased Gabriel Okiror who had been accused of theft, resisted arrest by police officers who had been called in by the school administration after the situation escalated beyond the school authorities.
“Okiror had a case of theft at school, and the head teacher contacted the police, the officers came to school to pick the boy, but when they attempted to put him on a motorcycle, he resisted. He was very provocative and refused to cooperate” Mr. John Omugur, the school director told media at the school.
However, Okiror is said to have resisted sitting on the police motorcycle to be taken to Ngora Central Police Station prompting a struggle during which the firearm discharged, fatally wounding Okiror and injuring a teacher, Mr. Bernard Majja who had attempted to intervene in the scuffle.
The injured teacher, Mr. Majja Bernard, is currently admitted at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital in critical condition.
